Nancy W. Sindelar (PhD ’87). Her program focuses on the people, places, and activities that shaped the legendary author who courted life-threatening adventures and glamorous friends while writing articles, novels, and short stories that captivated the world. Sindelar begins with Hemingway’s birth and early influences in Oak Park, Illinois and then moves to Hemingway’s adventures and experiences in Kansas City, Italy, France, Spain, Key West, Florida, Cuba, and Sun Valley, Idaho. The presentation includes rarely seen photos and excerpts from Hemingway’s personal letters to parents, wives, children, and friends.

Influencing Hemingway: The People and Places That Shaped His Life and Work. A book signing will follow the program.

Nancy W. Sindelar, PhD is the author of
Influencing Hemingway: The People and Places That Shaped His Life and Work and has made many popular presentations about the life and work of Ernest Hemingway. In June, 2011, 2013 and 2015 she presented at the International Colloquium Ernest Hemingway in Havana, Cuba. In May, 2014 and 2015 she spoke at the American Literature Association Conferences in Washington, DC and Boston. In June, 2014, she spoke at the Hemingway Society Conference in Venice, and in September, 2014, she was the keynote speaker at the Hemingway Festival in Sun Valley, ID.
In February, 2015 she spoke at the American Library in Paris, September, 2015 she returned to Sun Valley to keynote the Hemingway Festival, and in October, 2015 she keynoted the Michigan Hemingway Society Conference. In 2016 she is scheduled to keynote the Hemingway Days Festival in Key West, FL and lead a walking tour featuring the homes and favorite sites of young Hemingway at the Hemingway Society Conference in Oak Park, IL. She is a board member of the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park and teaches
Hemingway: The Man, The Writer, The Legend at University of California, Riverside.
Sindelar’s presentations are energized by her passion for all things Hemingway, her research into his private letters, his fiction and non-fiction, and her extensive travel to and knowledge of the locales that were important to the writer. She has stood in the bedroom where Hemingway was born and the foyer where he ended his life and has visited all the places in between.
